Oakdale Borough

On June 18, 1893, seven months after the Borough was incorporated, a
Group of interested men met and drafted a charter, constitution and by-laws For Oakdale Hose Company No. 1. The charter read as follows
"We, the undersigned
Citizens of the Borough of Oakdale, Pa., believing by thorough
Organization and practice' that we can assist or help protect property against Loss by fire, have organized ourselves into a Company and for its government Do adopt the following code of laws:' nine articles or organization followed, Among them the name of the Company, Oakdale Hose Company No. 1, consisting of any male citizen of Oakdale over the age of 17

| November 2, 1893 at the regular meeting, Chief Laley announced the hose cart has been |
ordered at a cost $85 and will be deliverd in December, this was the first real firefighting equipment purchased by the Oakdale Hose Company it put on equal terms with any of the few volunteer fire departments, and ahead of many. In Febuary of 1923 we purchased our first real fire truck. a Howe Fire Truck on a Chevrolet Chassis for $2,500 plus hose load and eqiupment for $500. it wasnt a pumper it just got the men and the equipment to the fire. While this shiny new fire truck was everyones pride and joy, it had its drawbacks the rear wheels were the wrong ratio, and a platform extending beyond the rear wheels to hold me whould get filled to an extent when the front wheels would begin to lift off the road making it impissible to steer. the fire truck was to big to fit in the fire house witch at the time was the lower floor of the old council house. so it was kept in Mitchill's Gararage, and each night was moved to the front entrance so there was no delay in answearing alarms. In January 1927 the memebers of the Oakdale Hose Company decided to build there own fire house and it

be a concrete block building. After moveing the truck outside the first meeting in the new fire house was held on March 2, 1926. Late in 1927 the members relized the 1925 Howe-Chevrolet fire truck. While a great improvment, could not handle the job in January 1928 they replaced a bent front axle on the fire truck and in May 1928 the Oakdale Hose Company ordered a new LaFrance pumper at $5,500 and $1000 in equipment. The 1925 Howe-Chevrolet was used for its trade in value and the new LaFrance was delivered in November of 1928. The Oakdale Volunteer Firemens' |
Association was officially chartered in July 1931 and joined State, County, and Wester Pennslyvania Firemens Association. This was a legal requirment and put the relief fund in control of the state of Pennsylvania. In 1935 the Hose Company purchased a second hand Cadillac to be made into a squard car with a open body for a extra $30. the last time on record when the hose cart was used was in 1937 when the streets were in the process of being paved and no vehicular traffic was aloud. After this time the Hose cart

out of service. A 2nd floor was put in at the end of August 1939 and the first regular meeting held in the new meeting hall was on September 5,1939. At the end of World War II the Oakdale Hose Company decided to buy a new 1947 International Chassis which was adopted to for the fire service with the addition of a pump, tank, and other equipment the

LaFrance was later sold. In April of 1954, we purchased the lot for our present building at a cost $1000. At the October 1957 meeting membership agreed to build a new building on the lot. In January 1960 a bid for $36,000 to build the

shell and complete the lower floor leaving the upstairs hall to be done by the firemen. The Concrete footer of the building was poured in March 1960, and the building was finnaly completed in Febuary 1961. In April of 1964 the Hose Company bought a International at $2,346, after delivery Barati Brothers built a custom body for $1,552. Equipment and Lettering brought |
the total cost to $5,000. This truck was Put into service in september 1964. In July 1967 the members agreed to buy a new Mack pumper for $27,000 and $7,000 in

equipment bringing the total cost to $35,000. The 1967 Mack Pumper was deliverd in July 1968, and was completed and put into service in December 1968. In April 1973 it was decided to replace the old International Squad Car with a GMC 12 passenger carry-all Van with slideing side door total cost equipped and lettered was $6,488. |
